NBL signs with Nine
Thursday, October 5, 2006 - 08:52 AM
NBL

Channel NineThe National Basketball League has continued the on-going expansion of its broadcast presence with the announcement today that Philips Championship games will be broadcast in Australia via Channel Nine on a weekly basis.

Starting from 15 October, Nine will show a one-hour highlights program every Sunday morning at 11:30am. The first game to be shown will be the South Dragons - Wollongong Hawks clash from Vodafone Arena.

NBL Commissioner Rick Burton said the new agreement with Nine would greatly complement the existing Philips Championship live coverage on Fox Sports.

“This is another major step forward for the Philips Championship and we believe this additional coverage on Channel Nine will help significantly grow interest in basketball across the country” Burton said.

“The Philips Championship now enjoys the best of both worlds – with live coverage three games a week on subscription TV via Fox Sports and highlights of one of the week’s most exciting matches on free-to-air television on Channel Nine. That’s a strong combination which will be envied by many professional sporting codes in this region.”

“When you combine this new partnership with our recently announced agreement with StarHub in Singapore, as well as our greatly increased coverage this season on Fox Sports in Australia and Sky Sports in New Zealand, you get a picture of a vibrant league which is continuing to grow its reach significantly and rapidly.”

“This new partnership wouldn’t have happened without the support and confidence of both Eddie McGuire at Nine and David Malone at Fox,” Burton added.

“The League is grateful that they have both seen the value of the Philips Championship. They, along with our other major sponsors such as Philips, ABC Learning Centres and Virgin Blue, have given us an outstanding vote of confidence which we intend to repay in the long-term.”

Stephanie Brantz, who will anchor Nine’s coverage said: “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to bring fellow NBL fans some great basketball action.”
